Change begins with the simplest things
I was watching a news report about Earth Day. It featured actor/activist Ed Begley Jr. and his environmental friendly house. He mentioned how he began by making the simplest changes/adjustments to his way of living about thirty years ago. Presently more of us are beginning to make some of the same changes in an effort to stop the destruction of our environment. I was surprised by the impact something as simple as choosing a light bulb can have on the energy we consume. He also mentioned something else that more of us are actually doing even in our schools--recycling paper. He is going to speak at the same conference where I am going to see author Riane Eisler this Saturday, April 28, 2007 at Claremont Graduate University. The conference is open to the public so anyone who is interested can go. No matter how small a change we make in our habits, it can have an impact and help save our planet and everyone on it....

I also share a deep afinity for the planet. It is true that even such a small thing as changing your lightbulb, reducing your shower time, carpooling, buying locally grown food instead of world shipped food, walking, riding a bicycle can have a significant impact on our planet. Sometimes we think that our small contribution in trying to reduce polution or save energy might seem insignificant but it will never be in vain. A simple thing like buying a reusable steel coffee cup or water bottle can have an over effect on the planet and our consumptuous culture. Think about how many foam (deadly and non biodegradable) or paper cups you will use over your lifetime--every single one of us can make a difference. The planet is in a crisis that we might not be able to get out of if our habits do not change. Imagine your grandchildren's or great-grandchildren's planet at the rate of deforestation and pollution we're going in. Think about the trend we're setting for the rest of the world--who will catch up with our trendsetting lifestyle soon. Imagine when we reduce our natural resources to the point of no return. They are finite and if we do not change then we will change the face of the earth until it is unrecognizable.
Good job changing the planet.
